Past Lives, Current Woes
In many cultures around the world the concept of our spirit or soul having a journey beyond the physical is the norm. The idea of reincarnating to experience variety makes sense if you look at it as an opportunity to see the world through a different lens. You can be a person of importance in one life and a homeless person in the next. Your current life may have relationships and obstacles which are meant to accelerate your growth and expand your awareness. People also tend to incarnate in groups to do the work of evolution. This “karma” explains why relationships are both temporary and eternal. Your actions, as an individual and in a group, stay with your soul and carry over into your next existence.
Life on earth is considered dualistic - meaning that we live in the world of opposites and choice points. You are born male or female, your ideas are either good or bad, people are either friend or foe. If you take this to larger groups of people such as communities, countries, or work organizations it’s easy to see how we can project our likes and dislikes onto others. We can have an affinity for our country and hate another, without ever having visited the country or meeting any of its people. Moving beyond dualistic thinking can open your eyes and mind to a new world.
The Sixth Sense
We have entered a time where technology and humanity are evolving and the multi-dimensionality of life is emerging as the new normal. Moving beyond the 5 senses to an expanded consciousness is on the menu for human evolution. Scientists now talk about and research the sixth sense and remote viewing. Knowledge of the intuitive sense has expanded and awareness of past lives has increased since Dr. Brian Weiss published Many Lives, Many Masters in 1988.
Dr. Weiss was a practicing psychiatrist who often used hypnosis as a treatment for his patients with difficulty resolving fear-based issues. He received referrals from other physicians for these difficult to solve patient situations which were often anxiety, unfounded fears, and phobias. During one memorable session a patient recalled a traumatic past life incident that was connected to her current life anxiety. Her ability to heal was expanded through a wider view of her fear than just the current lifetime.
33% of adults in 35 countries surveyed believe in reincarnation. In the US 31% of Americans hold this belief.
Pew Research 2025
As a result of Dr. Weiss’ extensive work with patients there are many more people exploring their past lives. Medical science has conducted research and there are academic institutions, like the University of Virginia, where physicians and other health professionals study life after death. The New York Times even highlighted these programs in a 2025 article that covered children with past life recall and near death experiences.
Humans are expanding our capacity to receive and send information through non-physical means. Developing your intuitive connection is common among practitioners of Reiki, shamanic work, psychic development, and professional licensed therapists. The Akashic Records, believed to be the energetic documentation of all that has been, has become more popular in recent years.
The most documented psychic, Edgar Cayce, said he accessed the Akashic Records to answer health questions of his clients and provide naturally based remedies. The musician, Prince, referred to the Akashic Records in one of his albums, The Rainbow Children. Dr. Ian Stevenson from the University of Virginia is well known for his research with children who can recall their past lives in great detail and ask their mother and father about their “real” parents.
How do I connect?
As a soul with a journey that is often invisible and unknown, you have had experiences that may not make sense to you. These times can keep you confused because you only look at your current situation. If you broaden your perspective when life doesn’t work out to your expectations, you can find that there are deeper issues to be uncovered. These issues are often past life unfinished business with others or repeating patterns that you are needing to resolve. Seeking mental health treatment can be beneficial, but if you have past life issues that are unresolved, a deeper cleanse of the soul can be helpful in addition.
You can learn more about your own right brained, intuitive nature through:
Meditation or Silence: Quiet the mind and let go of control so that your inner essence can shine through.
Exercise: Any type can be helpful. While Yoga and Tai Chi slow you down, any type of exercise can get you out of your overthinking mind. Runners, for example, get “in the zone” which allows them to stop thinking and just feel.
Walking: Spend time walking around your neighborhood or find a hiking trail where you can unwind.
Nature: Spend time away from technology, machines, and noise. Go into nature and spend time with birds, animals, and trees. You can feel refreshed and energized.
Energy work: Reiki, shamanic work, and other types of energy work provide a release from excessive left brained activity. The practitioner guides you into a resting state and accesses your subtle body system which can contain blockages and frozen areas. Clearing allows you to access more of your non-physical self.
Exploring your individual inner self and journey in this lifetime can be a wonderful multi-dimensional experience. Take the next step and see what unfolds.
